Supermarkets in Geneva
Grocery shopping in Geneva revolves around the two big Swiss retailers, Migros and Coop, alongside the discounters Denner, Aldi and Lidl. Opening hours are shorter than in many countries and most shops close on Sundays, so it pays to know the rules and the exceptions.

Opening hours in Geneva
- Monday to Wednesday: until 7 pm
- Thursday: late shopping until 9 pm
- Friday: until 7.30 pm
- Saturday: until 6 pm
- Sundays and public holidays: closed, with the exceptions below
In December, shops may open one extra evening until 9.30 pm between 10 December and 3 January.
New in 2026: two shopping Sundays a year
Geneva voters approved a change to the shop opening hours law in June 2026. Since 4 July 2026, shops may open on two Sundays a year and on 31 December, until 5 pm. The canton announces the chosen dates each year, usually ahead of the Christmas period.
Where to shop on a Sunday
- Migros, Cornavin station: every day, 6 am to 10 pm
- Coop to go, Cornavin station (ground floor, west wing): every day, 5.30 am to 11 pm
- Migros, Geneva Airport station (shopping arcade, level -1): every day, 7.30 am to 9 pm
- Migrolino, Eaux-Vives station: every day, 6 am to 10 pm
- Bakeries may open on weekends until 7 pm, and some petrol station shops and small family-run grocers open seven days a week.
Station opening hours are published by SBB without guarantee: check before making a special trip.
The main supermarket chains
- Migros: the largest network. Migros supermarkets sell neither alcohol nor cigarettes; Denner and Migrolino, which belong to the same group, do.
- Coop: the other major Swiss retailer, including Coop City department stores such as Coop City Fusterie.
- Denner, Aldi and Lidl: the discount chains.
- Aligro: a cash and carry wholesaler, also open to individuals.
Shopping in neighbouring France
Many Geneva residents shop across the border. Since 1 January 2025, you can bring back goods worth up to CHF 150 per person per day without paying Swiss VAT. Above that amount, VAT is due on the whole value, not just on the excess.
Some goods also have quantity limits per person per day:
- Meat: 1 kg
- Butter and cream: 1 kg or 1 litre
- Oils and fats: 5 kg or 5 litres
- Alcohol up to 18%: 5 litres; above 18%: 1 litre (from age 17)
- Cigarettes: 250 (from age 17)
Above these limits, declare your goods before crossing with the QuickZoll app or at a staffed border crossing. Failing to declare dutiable goods is an offence.
Practical tips
- Empty PET bottles can be returned to any shop that sells them. There is no deposit: recycling is already included in the price.
- Checkout plastic bags are charged, so bring your own.
- Self-scanning is common: "subito" at Migros (with a Cumulus card) and "Passabene" at Coop.
