Sport

Geneva's geography defines its sporting life. The lake supports a year-round culture of sailing, rowing, paddleboarding, and open-water swimming from May through September; the Salève and the nearby Jura offer trail running, road cycling, hiking, and paragliding within thirty minutes of the centre; and the Alpine resorts of Verbier, Chamonix, Megève, and Crans-Montana are accessible for skiing on day trips or weekends throughout the season.

Sport in Geneva

Geneva's geography defines its sporting life. The lake supports a year-round culture of sailing, rowing, paddleboarding, and open-water swimming from May through September; the Salève and the nearby Jura offer trail running, road cycling, hiking, and paragliding within thirty minutes of the centre; and the Alpine resorts of Verbier, Chamonix, Megève, and Crans-Montana are accessible for skiing on day trips or weekends throughout the season.

Within the city, club culture is dense and historically rooted. Tennis, golf, equestrian, and shooting clubs date back over a century in several cases; gymnastics and martial arts have well-established schools serving children and adults. Membership at the principal sporting clubs often involves waiting lists and sponsorship — particularly true for the older institutions.

This section covers cycling, horse riding, gymnastics, martial arts including aikido, shooting range, and bowling. Fitness centres are listed separately under Health & Wellness.
